CHAPTER SEVEN
SHE neednât have worried.
After that morning, and once he was satisfied that his mother was looking after Izzy properly, Will avoided her whenever possible.
Whether he was avoiding her or simply getting on with his work she wasnât sure, but he was never around, and Izzy took to spending several hours at a time curled up on the sofa in the kitchen, with a cat on her lap and a book taken from the selection in the study.
She needed to rest, not only to get over the anaesthetic but because her sleep pattern was shot to blazes by the awkwardness of the cast and the pain in her arm, but the enforced holiday was anathema to her.
When the inactivity got too much, she went over to the café and sat in the corner, people-watching and chatting to Mrs T when she could spare the time. She couldnât help much, of course, because there was little that could be done one-handed, but if she could do anything she did, and if it got busy she took herself off for a little walk to get out of the way.
And she spoke to Kate, of course, on a daily basis, and went to the hospital in a taxi for her check-up at the fracture clinic, and went to physio, and by the end of the weekend she was tearing her hair out.
âIs your arm sore?â Rebecca asked on Sunday evening.
She looked at the little girl, so like her father that it hurt, and summoned up a smile.
âA bit. Why?â
âBecause youâre crabby. Mummy was always crabby when she was sore.â
A huge wave of guilt washed over Izzy, and she sat down at the table next to her and gave a wry grin. âIâm sorry. Iâm just feeling a bit trapped and bored.â
âLike wet play,â the child said sagely. âI hate wet play. We have to stay inside and read or something, and the boys get horrible, and then the teachers get mad with us.â
âYou ought to go out with Dad round the farm,â Michael said, wandering in on the tail-end of the conversation and dropping into the chair opposite. âHe likes company. He gets bored on his own, too. Dad, Izzyâs bored. You need to take her round the farm with you.â
Izzyâs head whipped round. She hadnât realised Will was there, too. How much had he heard, and how ungrateful would he think she was?
She dredged up an apologetic smile. âIâm sorry. Iâm just not used to doing nothing. I donât make a very good patient. I should go back to London, really.â
He looked puzzled. âAnd do what?â
She shrugged. âI could go into the office.â
âIs there anything going on at the moment that only you can do?â
She thought about it for a moment, and was a little shocked to realise that, no, there was nothing that would grind to a halt without her. The only thing she could be doingâwould be doingâwas drumming up more business, and they frankly didnât need it.
âNo,â she replied. âThey can manage without me, Iâm sure.
